The "Twelve Months of Askeaton" Series
Twelve paintings depicting a different month in the life of Askeaton.
Askeaton, Co. Limerick, is a small historic town located on the banks of the River Deal. It's also where I live. A town steeped in history, and with many characters, places and things you wouldn’t necessarily know about, until you’ve stayed a little while.
I thoroughly enjoyed collecting photographs of suitable subjects and local landmarks for each month, being sure to include elements that locals would recognise, and others might appreciate.
I also wrote a short narrative for each painting, which I hope you will enjoy reading in the descriptions.
These paintings, along with a few others, were exhibited in the Askeaton Civic Trust building.
We had a lovely exhibition opening evening. Carmel, with the Tourist Office, is such a wonderful host.
As this series of paintings were already a calendar of sorts, with the help of Limerick Council, I created a local arts education fundraising calendar. From the sales, we made a total of €3,945 for the art and music departments of the local primary and secondary schools; As I believe arts in schools can often be overlooked and could always benefit from a bit of extra funding.

This was such a blast to create!
Principal Brendan Hayes, Fr. Seán Ó Longaigh, and I combined ideas to come up with a plan for a fun (but stealthily educational) four-wall mural for Askeaton Primary School’s large multifunctional room. I then had a truly enjoyable summer holiday translating my sketched out drafts onto the ten by thirty five foot walls.
After I was done, we held a wonderfully well-attended public viewing. But the real highlight for me was being there on the pupils’ first day back at school.
Seeing the kids come in, year by year, and take it all in for the first time was really something special.
Other
While living in Askeaton, there have been a few other things besides paintings I’ve done in the town, so I figured I may as well throw them on here as well.
I’m proud to have redone, restored, and created a number of bespoke signs around the town.
